Five letters in the Hebrew alphabet change form when they appear at the end of a word. The Talmud teaches (Megillah 2b) that it was certain צופים, or “seers” who prophetically identified these letter forms. Another mystical midrash teach that there is a hidden 23rd letter which will be revealed at the time of messianic redemption. In his Book of Hebrew Letters, Rabbi Lawrence Kushner says the 13th century kabbalistic text Sefer HaTemunah explains “that one letter is missing from our present Hebrew alphabet and that this letter will only be revealed in the future. The anonymous author goes on to explain that every defect in our present universe is mysteriously connected whit this missing letter — an unimaginable consonant whose sound will create undreamed of words and worlds...”

 

This “Shin Sofit” — final ש — is the first in a series imagining what a new Hebrew letter might look like.
