The first verse of the famous Friday night prayer, Lecha Dodi, begins:
“‘Guard’ and ‘remember’ in a single utterance”
It’s a quote from Rashi, who explains why the commandment regarding the Sabbath is introduced with different words in Exodus and in Deuteronomy:
“Be mindful of the Sabbath day to hallow it” (Exodus 20:8)
“Keep the day of Sabbath by hallowing it” (Deuteronomy 5:12)
These two words were spoken — and heard — as one.
In this piece, the Hebrew words shamor and zachor are intertwined and share letters, as a reminder of this special twofold quality of Shabbat, a glimpse of the profound depths of the Day of Rest.
It is hand-written, and one of a kind.
